Party Like It’s 1999

The day dawns with calm seas and low clouds on the horizon. The dramatic colors of sunrise change rapidly. It is a “blink and you will miss it” event. I am entranced.

Tomorrow morning we dock in Auckland for three days, before setting forth on the fourth stretch of our tour, an intensive visit to New Zealand.

I mentioned earlier that we find something to celebrate with music, food, and drink pretty much every day on the ship

Yesterday was Shrove Monday, or Rosenmontag. Lots of passengers on the ship are from the Rhine region, a heavily Catholic area of Germany where Carnival is celebrated to the max. A bit like Mardi Gras, to my understanding. The ship put on a parade around the outer deck. Funny costumes were worn. Music was blasted, and food and drink were consumed. The Rhinelanders celebrated pretty much all day.

Today is. . .Oktoberfest?  Not really, but Frühschoppen is a Bavarian tradition of consuming beer, white sausage, and pretzels before noon, just to get the kinks out from yesterday’s party. And of course you must wear your best Dirndl or Lederhosen.

Eve, with her good Prussian roots, shudders at the thought of wearing a Dirndl. She does admit to celebrating Carnival in a small way in her youth.

The cruise is going very well.
