I do not know how it happened, but Eve and I fell into a fixed dinner routine two or three weeks ago. We sit with Dresden and Bonn at our table on the port side at the rear of the “Four Seasons” restaurant four or five nights a week. The table is not reserved, but one couple usually shows up early to hold places.
Eva is our regular waiter responsible for drinks. Aristeo is responsible for our food. By now, they know us well.
Having this fixed routine is very relaxing. We banter easily, trade stories about our day’s activities and comment on all and sundry. A civilized way to spend time. We see each other only at dinner.
Since our routine began I have observed the four tables in the back corner of the restaurant. Although each table has places for four, each has been occupied for dinner by a single couple. The same couple at each table each evening. I remember thinking, “Well, some people prefer to be alone. That is OK.” But it left me feeling just a little sad.
Last night, I was delighted to see that, after two plus weeks of eating alone, couple A had joined couple B at their table for dinner. The conversation was flowing.
This cruise is going well.
