Marlborough Sound and Picton

Following my sister’s recommendation, Eve and I were on the balcony early this morning to monitor our cruise through the Cook Strait to Picton in the Marlborough Sound.

The day’s excursion: hike a bit of the Queen Charlotte Track, a long distance hiking trail running along the coast on the other side of the Sound. We took a shuttle bus to a ferry boat, which took us across the sound to our starting point.

During the ferry boat ride, I daydreamed of a trip to Norway where I spend a week on the water fishing. I have not told Eve about this yet.

We study the map before starting out. I daydreamed of taking three or four days to hike the 78 kilometer long Queen Charlottes Track. Well, that’s just not practical. Maybe the Camino de Santiago?  Or the Appalachian Trail?  I must find the proper moment to discuss this with Eve.

Wake up, Joe.  Our hike led us through a forest of Tree Ferns, which continue to fascinate me. Our guide informed us not only about the tree ferns, but the other flora and fauna we saw along the way.

Back to the ferry boat, which took us back to Picton. We walk through the small town, then take the shuttle back to the ship.

Tomorrow: Akaroa
