The Meaning of Time

Yesterday, the sun rose at 8:10 am and set at 21:33 pm. Later than I am used to. We have been in a single time zone (GMT-3:00) for all of South America. The longitude ranges  from 33 degrees West to 88 degrees West.

Tonight we will set our clocks back one hour. It is not nearly enough!

Theoretically, there are 24 time zones in 360 degrees, or 1 zone per 15 degrees. One hour for 55 degrees? At some point we will have to catch up.

When flying somewhere, I have never paid attention to the transition of time with the travel. One arrives at a destination, and resets the clock once. Often by a large amount.

By ship, I am acutely aware of how the time zones slip (or don‘t slip!) by. Similar to traveling by car across the US. Except here at sea one also pays attention to latitude and longitude to know where one is. And, before GPS came along, longitude for a sailor was intimately related to time.

As you see, this second day of sea travel is not boring. Plenty of things to muse over.
