The HMS Wager

Our path took us out into the Pacific overnight. The captain had warned that it might be rough. We felt a little extra rolling during the night; by breakfast the ship was back in calm waters (Joe’s disappointment level: 6).

Mostly closed cloud cover gave way occasionally to a bit of sun. The flanks of the mountain peaks glowed green. Water flowed in narrow rivulets and falls down the hills.

Someone commented earlier on “The Wager”, a historical narrative of the journey along these shores of the HMS Wager, an English naval ship in ca 1750. The Wager was badly damaged during its struggle up the coast, finally stranding its captain and crew on an island.

Their survival and subsequent return to civilization are brilliantly described.

I let out a whoop (Joe’s excitement level: 10) when I realized the unusual landscape I was looking at was Wager Island.

  1. I am glad you had at least some rough seas near Wager Island.
