Rio Grande is a moderate sized port on the southern coast of Brazil. It is not a tourist spot but rather more industrial. We stopped purely to permit the Brazilian authorities to stamp our passports before we left Brazilian waters to enter Uruguay.
Nevertheless, we took a short walk into town after breakfast. It is Sunday, the natives of Rio Grande were either still sleeping or in church.
The town center had a number of colonial era houses, most in disrepair. The town in general looked to have seen better days. A bright red bicycle way along the main road had the only noticeable fresh paint.
There was a lot of discussion in the evening about why we would stop in such a harbor. Eve made the point that there is value in seeing how other people really live, as a reminder that our lives are pretty good.
There is a lot more to the world than shiny tourist spots.
