Rio de Janiero, Day 2

After breakfast, we set out to explore Rio on foot. From the dock we made our way through “Little Africa”. First abolished in 1888, slavery was the foundation of the sugar business in Brazil. Over a million slaves were brought to the country through the port in Rio. “Little Africa” commemorates the history and contributions of these people.

We continued through the town center. Much colonial architecture is still present along the streets, often intertwined with office or apartment towers.

Our route brought us to the coastal walking and bike ways for the rest of the day.  Wide swaths of greenery and curious flowers brightened the way.

Passing Sugarloaf, the roadway/walkway tunneled through the coastal hills brought us to Copacobana beach. We walked the 4 km stretch of the beach along the Atlantic, enjoying all that one can enjoy: The scenery, the crowds, the waves, the bistros.

We found the Metro (subway) station before dark, and returned to the ship exhausted and content.
