As daylight broke, most of us passengers were out on deck during our approach to Rio. Unfortunately, Christ the Redeemer and the top of Sugarloaf were covered by clouds. But the shear immensity of Rio was readily apparent.
We docked at the passenger terminal near the town center. The clouds soon lifted enough for clearer views.
The day’s bus excursion covered the touristic highlights. First stop: Tram ride up the hill to the base of the Christ statue and a pause for photos. Back to the bus and on to Sugarloaf, where a cable car brought us to the top.
These vivid experiences of seeing Rio from above cannot be captured with a camera. We mentally absorbed as much as possible.
Back on the bus for a driving tour along the Ipanema and Copacabana beaches, with a short pause for drinks.
Then return to the ship. Our first day in Rio was fine.
