Today‘s port strengthened the impression that we are indeed in the New World, and no longer in Old Europe. Maceió was founded in the 1850‘s, as an export center for sugar. Today, it has a booming tourist industry, in addition to its continuing export trade. It has about 1 million residents. The city is spread out, with wide streets and lots of vehicle traffic.
The tourist industry is supported by kilometers of hotels built on the beach strips on either side of the town. It is a regular port of call for cruise ships that sail up and down the Brazilian coast.
We berthed for 7 hours. Eve and I took a walk into town. I walked an additional stretch along the northern beach.
At 2 pm we cast off and set course for Salvador de Bahia.
