1.6 million people live in Recife. Our tiny cruise ship did not disturb their lives. I walked to the old city center after breakfast, got some Brazilian Reals from an ATM, and set off toward Olinda. (Eve has had a bad cold the last couple of days; she stayed in the cabin to hasten her recovery.)
My walk to Olinda was a little disappointing. I followed the coast road (a 6-8 lane highway) for about 8 km. Most of the ocean side is used by the military, and closed off. There were few trees or green spaces. Very little shade.
Olinda is the original Colonial settlement here, and is a colorful, well maintained and well visited tourist attraction.
After some water and a pause, I returned to Recife by foot. Followed a different large highway, but not much better luck.
Tonight we cruise to Maceió.
