Tioman Island

Anticipation for today’s excursion runs high. Tioman Island is considered one of the world’s most beautiful tropical islands.

Belonging to Malaysia, Tioman lies 20 km off the mainland coast.

The island is largely undeveloped and most remains in its natural state. The 3000 or so inhabitants live from tourism. Eve and I alight from the tender at the boat pier. We hike along the lone road past the single island resort to the main town in search of an ATM.

Ringgits in hand, we look for a cafe on the water.  We chat with Fritz and Johanna, refill our energy tank, and plan our next move.

Said next move is the hiring of a driver to bring us to Ali‘s Waterfall, high in the island‘s interior. A short hike from the truck through dense growth leads to the falls. We have it to ourselves for five minutes, before a group of young people arrive. Influencers, I think.

We drive back to town. Eve and I set out along the beach. The white coral sand is a stark contrast to the black volcanic sand. Nearing the tender pier, we pause again for a cooling drink. Eve dons her swimsuit and tries the water. I sit in the shade on the deck and let my thoughts wander.

Time to head back to the ship. Something is moving across the path in front of us. Monkeys!  I grab my phone firmly, take a few photos, then stick it deep in my pocket. I do not need to be told twice. In the end, these little fellows pretty much ignore us.

A last look along the beach before leaving. The afternoon sunshine sets the scene.
