A couple of blocks to the west, a long, wide sandy beach extends to the south. The sand is interspersed with low rock outcroppings. The vegetation provides evidence of the prevailing winds. We walk about 3 kilometers along the beach on a paved hike and bike trail before turning inland to the animal park.
Walking first through the bird enclosures, we marvel at the brilliant colors on display. The only disappointment: the birds seem little interested in the seeds we bought to feed them. Apparently they have had lunch already.
Then, onto the larger land animals. Here, too, most are taking an afternoon nap. But one kangaroo readily laps up the seeds and grass I hold in my palm.
This is the best photo I have of another endemic species.
Leaving the park we circle back into town along a creatively named nature refuge. We head to the harbor, where a collection of trendy shops and vacation rentals along the waterfront invites perusal. Following a leisurely stroll and coffee pause, we return to the ship, well satisfied with the day.
Tomorrow: Fremantle
