Chiloé

The ship anchored before daybreak in Castro, a town of 40,000 residents on the east coast of the island of Chiloé. Civilization! Evelyn and I breakfasted and set off for a tour of the town on foot.

Early afternoon we joined an excursion to the National Park of Chiloé, a protected nature preserve on the west side of the island. Situated on the Pacific, it rains often here.

The park is primarily wetlands. Numerous species of plants and animals live here, many found nowhere else.

Darwin explored the island thoroughly. He is aappropriately remembered.
