Praia and Darwin

 

The HMS Beagle, on its way to South America, moored in the Cape Verde Islands for three weeks. The young botanist on board, Charles Darwin, used the time to explore the surroundings and collect samples of plants and animals not yet known in England. Darwins encounters with the local inhabitants also made a big impression on him, as described in his logbook. 

His experiences in Praia are described with plaques near the places he visited and with (what else) an App one can download. 

I found it especially gratifying to visit these islands, given their role in our western thought and history.
