Praia and China

The MS Artania left Praia yesterday afternoon to begin the 5 day cruise to Brazil.

Today is a lazy sea day. The climate continues to warm; it is too hot to sit in the sun. But the temperature in the shade, with a little wind, is very comfortable. We planned to do nothing today, and so far everything is going to plan.

Impressions of Praia dominated last night‘s dinner conversation. Cape Verde (CV) is politically part of Africa. It has received significant aid from China over the last decade, as part of China’s efforts to extend its influence in Africa. We walked past a number of hotel and resort projects that have sprung up along the coast.

Unfortunately, many now remain incomplete or shuttered and are surrounded by tall barricades.

Looks like the money from China has run out. What does this mean for CV?  Time will tell.
