Following our much needed siesta, we set off refreshed on foot to see a few highlights and gather some impressions of Buenos Aires. We set the Obelisk on Avenue of July 9th as our goal. Leaving the harbor, we found a pedestrian bridge which allowed us to cross 14 or so lanes of freeway traffic with ease.
The view from the bridge, with the traffic and glass office towers in the background, reminded us of Dallas.
Beyond the freeway, we encountered a string of wide, well kept green plazas, beginning near the train station and leading towards town. Each plaza commemorates a figure or event in Argentinian history.
The generous amount of shade cast by the leafy trees invites leisurely strolling, despite the 35 degree temperatures. Both Eve and I found a comparison to Central Park apt.
The Avenue of July 9th is said to be the widest street in the world. It reflects a vision for monumental architecture that one seldom sees. Paris and Madrid are similar.
By now it is dinner time. We searched out an Argentinian steak house. Despite being warned, we ate too much red beef. I am entering rehab tomorrow.
