Rinca Island

The Artania enters Indonesian waters early this morning.

The thickly scattered small volcanic islands present a stark geologic contrast to Australia. We are seeing completely different continental structures.

Rinca is one of five islands that are home to the Komodo Dragon.

We are met at the landing by the local park rangers. They will accompany us to the visitor center.

Our first sightings are of water buffalo and monkeys.

The guide points out tracks left by a large lizard.

And we see our first Komodo Dragon at the waters edge. The guide points out several others as we continue.  They are well camouflaged.

We reach the visitor center and find 5 lizards lounging in their protected area. Actually, they are free to roam the island; we are in the enclosed area. They are eying us for lunch.

We have time to observe the animals for a while, and to visit the museum. Then back along the boardwalk to the tender pier. The rough mountainous topography is such a stark contrast to western Australia.

Once all are back on board, the ship weighs anchor and sets course for Gili Trawangan.

Stay tuned.
