Fear of being cursed for disturbing an historic or archaeological site applies not only to the Egyptian tombs and mummies. Some believe the curse now extends to those who remove a brick fragment or artifact as a memento of their visit to sites such as Port Arthur.
The park rangers at Port Arthur report that tourists have been returning stolen keepsakes to the site for decades, often with a letter apologizing and with a description of the troubles they have been experiencing.
The authorities take this with seeming good humor. Our walk past a graveyard just outside the site however raised concern. The telephone company has a functioning phone booth at the cemetery entrance. An abundance of caution perhaps?
We took nothing but photos with us.
