Valparaiso, Viña del Mar

Valparaiso is known for its “Ascensors”, the funiculars (slanted elevators) that carry people up to and down from the heavily populated hills surrounding the central town.

We rode one up to Cerro Concepción, a neighborhood filled with artists’ shops, restaurants, and colorful, historic buildings.

The hills also offer dramatic views over the bay. Completing our ramble through the streets, we took an ascensor down to meet the bus, and drove on.

Viña del Mar neighbors Valparaiso to the north. It is a wealthy beach resort, with many high rise apartments.

We enjoyed lunch together at a lovely restaurant on the beach. The Pisco Sours made a good tour a tick better!. Salud!

Following lunch, some dipped their feet in the Pacific. Then, back on the bus for our return to the ship.

The outing had a special meaning for Evelyn and me. My mother, Abuelita, was born in Viña del Mar, almost 100 years ago. It was good to think of her again.
